The Bend of Islands is unique
in Australia. Located on 400 hectares of natural bushland on the Yarra
River near Christmas Hills, it is only 28 kilometres from the heart of
Melbourne and forms a wildlife corridor between Warrandyte State Park
and Kinglake National Park.
The area's zoning is unique because it ensures only indigenous plants
are planted and no cats, dogs, horses or other domestic animals are
allowed. This, combined with other aspects of the zoning, ensures the
environmentally sensitive area experiences minimal impact from
residential living.
The Bend of Islands Conservation Association (BICA) is a strong and
active community organisation to which nearly all residents of the Bend
of Islands belong. BICA aims to preserve the native flora and fauna and
the natural beauty of the Bend of Islands area, and to collaborate with
others in associated conservation activities. BICA undertakes a wide
range of activities including:
Providing continuing education for residents and other interested people
on conservation issues including field days;
Liaison with local government and other authorities on all aspects of
the area; and
Landcare through development and implementation of a weed strategy and
pest animal eradication program.
